Overview of Genres

Genre is a French word meaning “type” or “style”. Genre refers to the way a particular film can be categorised through its use of a standard technique or well-used style or plot. A genre is like a recipe, certain things will happen in certain genres. You know that in a Western genre film, there will be cowboys on horses, good guys and bad guys, the setting will be the American West of about 100 years ago or more. However in a Romantic genre film, a man and a woman will meet and fall in love, and despite all sorts of misunderstandings, they will end up together and happy at the end. These regularities or conventions within genres are called genre identifiers. People choose if they want to watch a film usualy based on a genre.

Genre identifiers are not only found within the story and setting but are woven into the very production of a film as each genre has its own technical conventions too. For example, in a horror film, high camera angles are used to create a sense of characters vulnerability, scary music is used to build tension and shades are kept to black, grey and other dark shades. Whilst, in a romantic comedy most camera angles will be eye level and the lighting will be bright, the focus soft making it seem a bit dreamy and colours are usually light shades like green, white and yellow. Gangster movies often have a reduced palette of colours, focusing on blue and grey and lots of shadows and darkness. Sports movies have lots of colour and movement and usually have rock music. These all give an effect of being dark and dangerous or light hearted and funny.

Genre identifiers are also linked the production of an advertisemments, as each genre has its own technical conventions too. For example, in a Direct Marketing advertisement, eye-level camera angles are used, as well as bright lighting, to create a positive connection between the host (seller) and the viewer (consumer). Sporting advertisements, which promote a notion of brand-loyalty (Relationship Marketing) advertisements have lots of colour and movement and usually have rock music. You can see in advertisments such as gym ones they images of people with big muscles as this appeals to people who want to go the gym. Advertisments are all about how well they connect with the audience.

Advertising Genre selection

For my advertisment I will be using popular culture. This is because Rugby is a culture in it self. This means that people who want to play rugby will be able to

associate themselves with the animation. This means that more people will want to join the club. Also if I show the club I have chosen as being the best then peolpe will join.

Film Genre selection

The film Genre I will be choosing is action. This is because Rugby is action packed. The audience who plays rugby will also like action movies because Rugby is basically all action. You have to on your toes the entire time. If I chosen comedy it would not work, as the audience would not understand the connection between comedy and rugby.

Componenets of a good advertsment

  • Attention grabbing title

  • Have a compelling first image

  • Show the benefits for the customer

  • Have a line that is stating that the customer should come to you buisness

  • Make is legible

  • Have reasons why your company is better than a rivals

Storyboards

A story board is a plan of what you are going to make. Like anything that you are going to make a storyboard is like a first draft. A storyboard is made up of grids, in each grid you draw the thing that you are going to do with your animation. It shows what is going to be in each frame of your animation. When you make a stop motion animation you have to know what you are going to do. If you don't then your animation will not will not have structure and it will be random.
